Vector Control

The City Street Department oversees the operation to control mosquitoes within the City. Crews use a bio-control program to control mosquitoes by applying a granular larvicide at known breeding sites throughout the City in addition to a chemical contact ground spray and occasional aerial spraying. Ground spraying can only occur when there are winds no greater than 15 mph and a temperature no less than 55° F. Ground spraying occurs as close to dusk as possible to target the mosquitos when they are most active.

Crews are constantly monitoring mosquito numbers with the use of mosquito traps. These traps are also sent to the North Dakota Health Department each week (if necessary) to test for mosquitos carrying disease. Follow the City of Devils Lake – Public Works Facebook page for updates on ground and aerial spraying times.
