Spring and Fall Clean Up

The City of Devils Lake promotes City wide Spring and Fall clean up each year both by allowing City residents with can service to go to the inert landfill free of charge on specified dates and by providing free special pickups. Spring and Fall Clean Up is not available to accounts that have dumpster service.

DISCLAIMER: The City of Devils Lake is not responsible for items which are inadvertently picked up during the Spring Clean Up. It is the home owner's responsibility to ensure that there is a clear definition between what they do and DO NOT want picked up. Any items that are set out anywhere near the items which they intend to have picked up could be mistakenly disposed of. The City WILL NOT be responsible for the replacement of any of those items.

Acceptable Items For Spring and Fall Pickup

  • Any item not considered household garbage - put smaller items in bags or boxes to avoid debris blowing away
  • Furniture, carpet, mattresses, toys, dried/empty paint cans
  • Appliances - all doors from refrigerators or freezers need to be removed to prevent accidental suffocation (there is an extra charge if the appliance has freon)
  • Tires (there is an extra charge)
  • Bagged leaves and grass
  • Small cut trees and branches
  • Small amounts of construction debris - wood, tile, tubs, sinks
  • Windows, doors, or other glass items should be set aside from the rest of the items so they can be hand loaded to prevent injuries to workers and reduce the chance of broken glass in your yard or alley

Non-Acceptable Items For Spring and Fall Pickup

  • Regular household garbage
  • Anything containing asbestos
  • Liquids of any kind
  • Batteries
  • Microwaves, televisions, computer monitors, laptop computers, ipads, tablets - these items must be disposed of in your regular garbage. If the item does not fit in your garbage can, put the item in a special City bag and place it next to your garbage can for collection. If it does not fit in the bag, tape the bag around the item and it will be picked up. Special 30 gallon bags are available at Leevers County Market or Walmart. Special 15 gallon bags are available at City Office.

Where Do I Find The Date For The Special Pickup At My Residence

  • See the "Residential Special Pickup" map, pick up a City calendar at City Hall located at 423 6th Street NE, or print the calendar online under Maps/Recycling Calendar to see which week the pickup will take place in your neighborhood. These calendars also contain dates when City residents are allowed to haul unwanted items to the inert landfill themselves.
Where And When Do I Place My Items Out For Pickup
  • All items for special pickup must be placed out by 7:00 a.m. on Monday in the same place you put your regular garbage (please make sure your garbage can is not right by the items to be picked up or your can may get picked up too).

  • Place your items in an open area so the crew and trucks are able to easily access and load the items.

  • Due to the volume of items placed out and the time involved in picking up these items, the City is not able to come back for items that were not placed out in time for pickup.

How Much Volume Am I Allowed To Put Out For The Special Pickup

City residents with can service are allowed to put out up to 5 cubic yards of material (about 2 pickup loads) in the spring and the fall. Any amount exceeding 5 cubic yards will be picked up and billed to the homeowner according to the City's Resolution of Fees and Rates.

Inert Landfill Free Days

These free landfill days are open only to those who have a City residential account with can service (not available to accounts that have dumpster service) and we encourage residents to take advantage of these days and haul their items to the landfill themselves.

For a complete listing of free landfill days offered below please refer to the City calendar which can be picked up at City Hall located at 423 6th Street NE or printed online under Maps/City calendar.

  • There will be no charge for City residents with can service to haul to the inert landfill from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for the the Saturday before the spring and fall special pickups. No appointment necessary.

  • The landfill will also be open for free dumping by appointment at 9:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, for one week prior to spring and fall special pickups.
